A Humble and Teachable Heart

“Then Job answered Yahweh, “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be restrained. You asked, ‘Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge?’ therefore I have uttered that which I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I didn’t know. You said, ‘Listen, now, and I will speak; I will question you, and you will answer me.’ I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you. Therefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.”” (Job‬ ‭42:1-6‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

People tend to speak carelessly as if they know everything, but a lot of what they say is based on assumptions and vain imaginations of the mind.

When God shows up to question you, you will realize that you know almost nothing.

Don’t utter so much nonsense until God has to appear and deflate that harmful pride.

“But if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he doesn’t yet know as he ought to know. But if anyone loves God, the same is known by him.” (1 Corinthians‬ ‭8:2-3‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

The truth is that we know so little—not even scraping the surface of God’s infinite wisdom.

There is still much more depth to what you think you know very well.

“At the end of twelve months he was walking in the royal palace of Babylon. The king spoke and said, Is not this great Babylon, which I have built for the royal dwelling place, by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty? While the word was in the king’s mouth, a voice came from the sky, saying, “O king Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: The kingdom has departed from you. You shall be driven from men; and your dwelling shall be with the animals of the field. You shall be made to eat grass as oxen. Seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever he will.” This was fulfilled the same hour on Nebuchadnezzar. He was driven from men, and ate grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of the sky, until his hair had grown like eagles’ feathers, and his nails like birds’ claws. At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and I praised and honored him who lives forever; for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom from generation to generation. All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; and he does according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and no one can stop his hand, or ask him, What are you doing? At the same time my understanding returned to me; and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and brightness returned to me; and my counselors and my lords sought to me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent greatness was added to me. Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven; for all his works are truth, and his ways justice; and those who walk in pride he is able to abase.” (Daniel‬ ‭4:29-37‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

When Nebuchadnezzar credited the glory of Babylon to his own might, the kingdom departed from him. Nebuchadnezzar became a madman, and lived in the field for seven years like an animal. His hair and nails grew long like a beast.

After that, the kingdom returned to him, and he was utterly humbled. He became a believer who gave praise and glory to Yahweh.

Glorify God and ask for His wisdom. Stay humble and teachable no matter what. Be slow to speak, and patient to listen. This way, you will avoid unnecessary hard falls and enjoy a blessed, fulfilling life. The wicked and foolish rush straight into destruction, but those who trust in the Lord are wise and they shall have many good days!
