當我們都早已習慣身份證隨身而行，有否想像過，在七十多年前香港居民並沒有任何身份證明文件，並在1949年起才開始為每一個合資格居民簽發一張沒有照片、僅寫上持證人個人資料的卡紙？
1949年制定的《人事登記條例》，明文規定香港居民需申請身份證明文件，合資格的香港居民開始申領身份證。除了基本個人資料如姓名、性別、相片、身份證號碼之外，紙質身份證還需列明住址、工作地址和職業，並容許僱主協助僱員辦理，以確保更多合資格人士申領。也因為香港擁有多元種族，當時的身份證更需申報種族及國籍。在往後的1950-70年代期間，為了確保民眾均申請身份證明文件，當局更特別設有流動登記隊前往南丫島、大澳、新界區、街坊福利會、高爾夫球會、學校、鄉事委員會、廟宇、魚市場等提供登記服務，推動全民登記身份證。在這個階段的香港，增進的不止是人口及社會經濟發展，更多人也開始以香港為家。一紙身分證，標誌著「香港人」身分意識的萌芽。
1987年簽訂《中英聯合聲明》後，為配合回歸過渡安排，身份證分為永久性居民身份證及香港居民身份證（分別為3粒星和1粒星去區分），前者列有「本證持有人擁有香港居留權」字眼，確認持證人於回歸後仍有香港居留權。而隨著社會變遷及科技日新月異，身份證設計亦越見繁複，並反映在材質選擇、晶片嵌入及防偽技術上，2018年開始更換的智能身份證，便擁有9種防偽功能，也記錄更多個人資訊，跟六十年代只有中英姓氏、身份編號、相片和指紋的膠面身份證不可同日而語。歷史檔案館向入境事務處借來歷年各代身份證明文件正本，以及多部處理申請事務的原裝機器，包括製作身份證相片的放大機及查閱身份證紀錄的膠卷閱讀機，連同昔日歷史照片及海報同步展出，詳細介紹身份證設計及人口政策在七十載的變化。
