[BREAKING NEWS] Cheekiemonkies caught on video vandalising a wall in public in SG!!!
#fakenews cos this was actually part of a Graffiti workshop we participated over the weekend. So yep, it was still a S.A.D. but Saturday Art Date instead of Saturday Adventure Date with the fam. And can I just say this was a guided tour that the monkies were looking forward to? All because it involved spray painting graffiti on a public wall. 😅
The guided tour started with an hour’s walk around Kampong Glam - I don’t have to tell you how eclectic that area is - where we were introduced to all the street art that were done using only spray paint. They looked amazing, and even better that our guide was an actual street artist himself so he gave a lot of insights, especially struggles that the local street art scene faces.
Of course the highlight of the tour was the hands-on graffiti workshop. We were given a quick crash course on how to design our own street art and given a practical lesson on how to control the spray paint can. NOT EASY!!! Especially the outlining bit. But we did bumble through in the end - with our very own spray-painted graffiti art to bring home! Totally entertaining not only for kids, but for adults too. Somehow, graffiti art brings out the rebellious streak in a person? 😜

【 Echoes

Colasa is an avant-garde artist known for his imaginations. In addition to his graffiti art, Colasa also continuously experiences with new materials and substances to enhance the expressiveness of his works.
Colasa was born in Taiwan and majored in art related fields throughout his academic career. After graduating from high school, Colasa fell in love with skateboarding and graffiti. At the time, street culture or subculture was still very new to Taiwan, and so he had to look towards the internet to find anything related graffiti art.
Having studied art since childhood, Colasa insists on the defiance of traditional art forms and adopts a rather unconventional creative method -- graffiti. With his very own unique style and Chinese ink inspired techniques, Colasa is making a name for himself in the international arena!

Rainbow in The Darkness
2017
The transformation of scars, the writings of freedom, the characteristics of open spaces and the time lapses of changes
This work responds to the outdoor installation of Spectrosynthesis - Asian LGBTQ Issues and Art Now organised by MOCA Taipei in 2017. Scars are the early inspiration to the artist, which later incorporated with writings, expressing the sense of public and privacy between day and night through the light. A set of eight matrixes is painted black and set on the square, forming a closed space. It is an interactive site-specific installation that allows people to leave their messages to integrate personal experiences within the public spaces. The square has become more than a space with audiences’ participation. The installation, space and audiences have been the one together in response to the concept suggested.
People usually express their emotions by graffiti or carvings on walls, while those marks would turn into important inscription of the eras. Rainbow in the Darkness intends to reduce mental scars resulting from verbal or non-verbal violence that left in people’s mind while they were growing up. Through the black matrixes lining up in the centre of the sqaure, the artist creates dialogues between the individual and the public. In the daytime, visitors leave texts or patterns by removing some black paints on the matrixes with a scraper, while in the nighttime the matrixes reveal those marks through the light from colorful LEDs installed within like the time lapses with personal and public stories. The work tells a story of people facing their scars bravely even in the face of much suppression, which ends up becoming a record of this era.
