I still remember the first day of my law course, sitting in the lecture hall next to people from private and selective schools, and feeling nervous, out of place and undeserving.

And when they came to Australia, they worked hard, they always did the right thing, they tried to fit in, and they created a good family life for us. All my siblings went to uni, and we have all become professionals.

Back when we arrived, there was a bit more compassion for refugees. I think that's what's missing in Australia these days. Even in some of the ethnic communities, I feel that there's sometimes a lack of compassion, because they forget where they've come from. So when people say something negative about refugees, I always speak up with my story, to try to bring kindness back into the conversation.

“Love and kindness is in short supply.” This is something I wonder about. So, the idea of saying “fight back” may feel like it’s “encouraging”violence, to some people. But then, I wonder, when there are people who are BANKING on you showing them love and kindness whilst simultaneously REFUSING to exhibit any and continuing to be violent themselves, spread hate and create unsafe environments, at some point, perhaps we need to ask ourselves; is this dynamic fair and balanced?

They say an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind, but then if someone is going around just taking eyes... and if they don’t stop even when you firmly and politely stand your ground, and then NO ONE around steps in to STOP THEM or protect the people being attacked, does this seem like a logical choice? A safe choice?

And this is a another reeeally important question I have to remind myself to ask; would a person who respects you and cares for you WANT you to abandon your safety, dignity and humanity like this? I think, no. They would not. Would a society that cares for you want you to compromise your safety, dignity and humanity? No, it would not.

So where I’m at now, is that if it get to the stage where individuals or individual groups get to the point where they have to fight back, then somewhere along the way, they’ve probably been failed by their community or a society. And also, i thinj it isn’t so much that love and kindness is in short supply, but that it is being demanded of different people and different communities very unequally.

I first heard about cord blood banking 13 years ago when I was pregnant with Isobel. My family history of breast , throat and colon cancer played a bit part in my decision to bank Isobel’s cord blood and even though cord blood stem cells aren’t being used to treat those diseases right now, research IS ongoing and I really believe this will be the treatment of choice in the near future.

I look at it more as insurance for Isobel, and for me.

Oddly, I didn’t think of storing Iman and Isidore, my second and third childs’ baby cord blood – probably because I thought Isobel’s cord blood would be enough for her siblings SHOULD they need it… but when I found out I was pregnant with Ilon, and made the decision to proceed with the pregnancy despite the odds, I revisited the decision to bank my 4th child’s cord blood but not without some concerns from Azmi – and rightfully so.

My primary reason for banking Ilon’s cord blood was for peace of mind. When I made that decision to keep my precious baby, naturally Azmi and I committed to it and did so much to prepare for Ilon’s birth to ensure his and my health and life was priority.

But is cord blood banking one of the things you ought to consider? To decide, it helps to know how the process works, and what cord blood may be able to do (and can’t), should you ever need it.
