【葡萄牙文化國寶 ~ 法朵音樂】
【A national cultural treasure of Portugal ~ Fado music】

法朵音樂 〜 葡萄牙的音樂象徵: 以它的悲涼曲調和歌詞去觸動每位聽眾的心靈。

Fado music ~ a musical symbol of Portugal: touching the souls of every listener with its mournful tunes and lyrics.

19世紀初, 法朵音樂開始在里斯本出現，相信是起源自 阿法瑪 (Alfama), Mouraria 和 Bairro Alto 這些在當時里斯本較古舊和貧困的社區。

在最初, 法朵是由一些水手和城市勞工階層做的民謠演出。那時候, 法朵表演是以跳舞為主。 往後, 葡萄牙結他 (Portuguese guitar) 的使用, 使得法朵演出轉變成以演唱為中心。法朵之後更被帶到葡萄牙著名的大學城 科英布拉 (Coimbra), 受到當地大學生和教授們, 怎至貴族的歡迎, 亦令法朵開始普及至國家的其他社會階層。

長久以來, 法朵音樂的主題仍然不變: 圍繞著有關命運, 死亡, 絕望等。其不可或缺的原素是 "saudade": 深情的思念與懷緬之情, 以及對愛情的熱切嚮往。

雖然法朵音樂是以葡萄牙語演唱, 但欣賞著法朵演唱者的表演時, 儘管不能明白歌詞意思，也能從他們的真摯演繹中, 感到有股強烈的憂傷情感, 湧上心頭。來到里斯本或科英布拉旅遊時, 嘗試找時間在晚上, 到一間有法朵演唱的餐館或純正的 Fado House, 欣賞一場精彩的現場法朵表演, 豐富您的葡萄牙之旅和對葡萄牙文化的認識。:-)

Fado started to emerge in the early 19th century in Lisbon, believed to have its origins in the then old poor districts such as Alfama, Mouraria and Bairro Alto. In the early years, Fado was performed by sailors and people in the urban working class, and dancing took a more important role in this type of folk music. Later on, the use of Portuguese guitar has made singing the essential part of a Fado performance. Fado was afterwards taken to the prestigious university city of Coimbra and began to gain in popularity across social classes, among university students and professors, and aristocracy as well.

Over the years, the themes of Fado remain unchanged: destiny or fate, death and despair. Its essential element is “saudade": a deep feeling of longing or nostalgia and yearning for love.

Fado is sung in Portuguese. Despite the fact that you may not be able to understand the words, but nevertheless when you are enjoying the performance by fadistas (fado singers), a strong sense of sadness and melancholia would quickly descend on you. While you are in Lisbon or Coimbra, try to squeeze time one evening for a captivating live Fado performance at a restaurant or fado house to enrich your journey in Portugal and your knowledge of Portuguese culture. :-)

Have a look at my own collection of "fado-related" products. Indeed when you're in Portugal, you can often see a lot of souvenirs and products related to fado music at really good prices.

China Town has two popular hawker centre: Maxwell and China Town Complex. But did you know there is another hawker centre popular among the locals? It is called Hong Lim Market & Food Centre and it's actually pretty near the MRT station. My viewers told me I had to visit there, so here I am. Is the food really good? Is it worth visiting? Join me as I try 5 stalls in Hong Lim Market.
